ASABA—AS the Delta State Government prepares to host the next South-south Economic Summit billed for April 26 to 28 in Asaba, the government has approved the contract for the demolition of hills around the Asaba Airport to allow for bigger aircraft to land.

The demolition of the hills became necessary so that “special and bigger” aircraft can start landing before the commencement of the South-south Economic Summit.

Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr Kenneth Okpara, who briefed journalists on the outcome of the state Executive Council meeting, said the contract was initially awarded to one firm at N7.4 billion.

He explained that though the contract amount was not reviewed, it had been awarded to three different contracting firms including ULO Consultants, Levante Construction Limited and CCC Construction Nigeria Limited.

Okpara said: “The President is coming to the summit and we want him to land here in Asaba and not in Benin. We have just ten days to put the airport in proper shape because that is one of the conditions given by Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, for bigger aircraft to land.”

He assured that the new arrangement was “a matter of government being proactive to ensure that things move on properly,” noting that the new arrangement on the contract award would not have additional cost implication on the total cost of the airport construction.

All this lamentation we do against d open corruption all over does not evn seem to b making any impact.In other climes,social media are fulcrums 4change,but evn wt facebook,nl,you tube& twitter combined,nobody evn seems bothered.Its indeed an upside down country& evrytin about it is nauseating

Send out on twitter and ask people to retweet. do same on facebook. maybe a major news network or full time social critic will pick on it and forece them to answer some questions.

Where is the source of this news?

This kind of waste gives ammunition to critics of the current implementation of the allocation formula. I'm sure the governor of this state along with the legislature have never passed any laws which helps to generate even N1 billion of revenues for the state. SMH

Warri is a hell hole with rubbish heaps left for weeks on the roadside. Pothole ridden roads...no working traffic lights...maruding armed robbers (every store or supermarket is closed by 6pm).

I once saw a car accident in warri...someone drove his car into a pole in the middle of jakpa road...that car was left there for a whole three months. I would travel, come back and the car was still there on road divider.

I don see warri finish. The only time the governor fixed some potholes was a week before his daughters wedding, and it was the route from the airport to the wedding venue.

Also the first madien flight to the asaba airport was a large size arik plane - which i believe is larger than the president's jet. Why they need to suddenly clear hills in 10 days now baffles the hell out of me. Anyway nothing is strange in Nigeria, the people dont care , which gives the government rights to do whatever they like.

You just heard @UYCO. He said the governor is the best. Its attitude like this i see from a lot of indigenes here. Every group of people deserve thier leaders, i guess.

I wont say the governor is incorrect but form the pictures there are no hills obstructing the approach path for a large aircraft.
